To make smartphones a tool for self-protection mainly for women, IT and communications Minster Ravi Shankar Prasad has released a statement according to which, no smartphone devices will be sold in the Indian market without the panic button key, which will connect to the nearest helpline in the case of emergency. This latest technical feature in the smartphones will make every users life safer and better. The Gazette has also been passed and it clearly mentions that in India from January 1, 2017, No smartphone devices manufacturing company will be allowed to sell its phones without the feature of panic button which will be activated by pressing numeric key – 5 or numeric key – 9 to invoke emergency call.
Although, the government has still not finalized the agency which will monitor this feature in smartphones but the sources confirmed that the decision on this will be taken shortly.
It has also been discussed with the smartphone manufacturing companies that either they can add the pre-loaded icon in the phones which will be activated by pressing it or if user press it on and off couple of times then the control center will take it as a distress call and can action immediately. For all this system function properly, there is a need of a properly trained control center, as suggested by IT minister.
Karbonn Mobile company has appreciated the step of government of making mobile phones a safety device that can work as an important tool in women’s safety. As discussed with the company’s spokes persons, the companies might increase the cost of the phones for adding this extra feature in their smartphones.
